Things to Know about Hand Truck Wheels, Tires and Casters
Perhaps the single most important component on your hand truck, cart or dolly are the wheels it rides on. Each style of wheel or caster has a purpose. Where you use your hand truck or cart should determine what kind of wheels or casters you should be looking for.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The wheels carry the weight. If you do not have a solidly constructed wheel it will ultimately fail under continuous use.
- Size matters
- Small – tiny wheels on large heavy duty frames confuse a lot of people. But if you are moving bulky appliances or other heavy objects in tight spaces the small wheels allow you to maneuver a hand truck with precision. When you’re trying to avoid damage to walls and things you’re moving this is pretty important. Spaces such as apartments, store rooms and sales floors need trucks with tiny wheels.
- Large – bigger wheels are better for carrying heavier loads over diverse surfaces. Whether a large wheel is smooth or treaded can also impact performance. Treaded or knobbed tires can be very beneficial on softer surfaces or even on dirt. Smooth tires can more easily move across
- Extra Large – there are applications where an extra large wheel is needed. Often, it is for handling heavier and bulkier loads over curbs, stairs or other obstacles. Vendors who handle the same kind of loads with consistency under diverse delivery conditions tend to use the extra large wheels for flexibility and convenience.
- Wheel type can affect performance under different conditions
- Pneumatic – these are tires that are air filled. They are great for handling a truck or a cart in water, snow, mud or other soft surfaces. But you sacrifice weight capacity with these types of tires.
- Flat Free – These are tires filled with solid foam or other such materials that give it a slight bit of give. This is good for managing both weight and going over uneven surfaces.
- Solid Rubber – These are the strongest wheels you can get. They roll over everything and handle the biggest loads. They last. Most hand trucks and carts are equipped with these wheels in various sizes because they can take the beatings of both weight and different surfaces.
